BRRILLIANT Sainsbury’s launches new heat and temperature sensitive label that change colour to tell you when food is off
EXACTLY when your food is still safe to eat has fuelled debates between, couples, roomates and colleagues for years.
But Sainsbury’s might have found the solution. The retailer has just introduced a “Smart Fresh” label, which changes colour from yellow to purple, the longer a pack has been open.
This acts as a reminder for reducing the amount of perfectly good to eat product being thrown away ‘just in case’.
The clever new label is also temperature sensitive, with the rate of colour change designed to slow down the cooler the fridge is.
For now, Sainsbury’s is testing the new technology on its own brand cooked ham only e across all its UK stores.
But the retailer confirmed to the Sun Online that it might roll it out across other products if the consumer response to the new pack is positive.
The retailer introduced the label as new figures from Wrap, the government’s waste advisory body, revealed that UK households are throwing away 1.9 millions slices of ham every day at a cost of over £170m every year.
The new Smart Fresh ham packaging is the latest in a string of initiative as Sainsbury’s ramps up in efforts to combat food waste.
